Anterior Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome (ACNES)
Anterior Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome (ACNES) is a frequently overlooked cause of chronic abdominal pain. It occurs when small sensory nerves that travel through the abdominal wall become trapped or irritated, leading to persistent, localized pain that often mimics gastrointestinal conditions.
Many patients with ACNES have already undergone an extensive GI work-up, including imaging and testing, that returns normal results. When abdominal pain continues without a clear digestive cause, ACNES may be the missing diagnosis.
At Natural State Pain & Wellness Center, ACNES is treated with ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, allowing Dr. Flaxman to precisely identify and target the entrapped nerve responsible for the pain. Ultrasound guidance ensures accuracy, improves effectiveness, and minimizes discomfort during the procedure.
